WHY DO I HAVE TO DO THIS?
“bless those who curse you, pray for those who abuse you”.
Luke 6:28 (ESV)
This is one of the difficult commands that puts some Christians off. To pray for someone who has offended us. Some of us will prefer to pray the David kind of prayers in the Psalms against our enemies, forgetting that we are in grace times because of Jesus Christ.
A story is told about a sick Christian sister who requested for prayers for healing because the doctors couldn’t tell what was actually wrong with her. Everything seemed fine but she just kept deteriorating. While her Pastor was praying for her, the spirit of God revealed that, her sickness was due to an unrepented sin of unforgiveness. The Pastor told her about it and asked her if she was ready to let go the offense and forgive the other Christian sister who had offended her. The sick sister said “over my dead body” and that there was no way she will ever forgive the other sister. No amount of words convinced this sick sister. Within two days, the Pastor received a call that the sick sister passed on.
Brethren, there is great healing in the sacrament of confession and forgiveness. Anytime you release pain or hurt from deep down within you, don’t you feel any calmness in your spirit? This is a mystery of God we can never understand. I love what Paul says in Romans 12:20, “if your enemy is hungry, feed him; if he is thirsty, give him something to drink; for by so doing you will heap burning coals on his head”. Why do I have to be carrying burden of unforgiveness that will give me high blood pressure? Sincerely, I would love to go to bed each day knowing I have nothing against anyone and also no one has anything against me. However, Jesus tells us in Luke 17:1–2, “It is impossible that no offenses should come”. Therefore, Paul tell us in Ephesians 4:26, “Be angry and do not sin; do not let the sun go down on your anger”.
Let us note that once we walk on this human planet earth, we will be offended, therefore let us chose to be kind with this command Jesus gives us today. This is an unnegotiable command from Jesus to pray for our offenders and persecutors. Remember He did it first on the cross when he said in Luke 23:34 “Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do.” He is telling is to do the same.
Shalom and Peace to you.
