WHO IS YOUR KING?
They cried out, “Away with him, away with him, crucify him!” Pilate said to them, “Shall I crucify your King?” The chief priests answered, “We have no king but Caesar.”
John 19:15 (ESV)
Beloved, when you read the account of the five gospels concerning Jesus’ ministry, you will notice that from day one, he was rejected and hated by the Jewish leaders and some sects of the public. This wasn’t the first time God was rejected by the same people he came to redeem. In Exodus 32:7-10, when Moses was before God’s presence, the people of Israel who had seen signs and wonders right from Egypt, were busy at the foot of the mountain worshiping a golden calf as their god. In our world today, we still see and experience such rejections by people because of various reasons. We will look at just five reasons which pertain to we as migrants or immigrants wherever you find yourself.
So, what will cause us to reject the King of Kings (Jesus Christ).
- Worldly pleasures and pleasing others:
1 John 2:16 (ESV) tells us “For all that is in the world—the desires of the flesh and the desires of the eyes and pride of life—is not from the Father but is from the world. We seek these things to give ourselves false hope and largely to please others. We can even kill because of worldly pleasures. Choosing worldly pleasures over responding to Jesus’ call for us to bless others means rejecting Him.
- Comparing ourselves with others
We all have reasons for traveling outside our homeland to seek greener pasture. What is the motive behind your traveling? Is it to compare yourselves to your siblings, friends, family members or fellow immigrant? In the Book of Exodus, the people of Israel, compared their exodus moment several times to that of slavery in Egypt. “If only we had died by the LORD’s hand in the land of Egypt!” they said. “There we sat by pots of meat and ate our fill of bread, but you have brought us into this desert to starve this whole assembly to death!” (Exodus 16:3). We also do reject God out of competitive spirit, which leads us to become too money conscious and wouldn’t even assist fellow immigrant for free.
- Busy making money or earning a living
Many of us Christian immigrants were on fire for the Lord before entering the various countries we live in now. Unfortunately, church has become a burden for us that we have sacrificed the Lord’s day to making more money. Life we understand is challenging and you have to make enough to pay the bills, rent, documentation or permit and send some remittance back home. God is the source of wealth (Deuteronomy 8:18), therefore if we replace time with Him to chasing money it means we don’t trust He can bless us even far more. Many of us are doing two to four jobs and not even rest for our bodies, let alone time for God. He told Peter and the others “Couldn’t you men keep watch with me for one hour?” (Matthew 26:40).
- Hard hearts
For some of us, it is just hard heartedness. We have purposed in our deep soul that God doesn’t exist and therefore everything is by their human effort. We reject any servant of God and therefore reject God’s word. I want you to know, it is more dangerous for you to live this kind of life. How do you get the strength to get up and work, the air you breath, and other unexplainable miracles which come your way? Do you question that? You are living a dangerous life, my brother, my sister, watch it.
- Broken heartedness
Life is very challenging, and Jesus told us in John 16:33 (ESV) “I have said these things to you, that in me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation. But take heart; I have overcome the world.” Losing a child or love one, your marriage, job, house or other property, finances and many more breaks the heart. Many Christians have rejected Jesus because of some of these situations. I always pray that ‘Father help me not to give up in life, because I have not reached the level of pain Job endured’. These are wilderness sessions which we need to fight hard trusting God to walk us through. I will encourage you to listen to David Wilkerson’s sermon on ‘Don’t die in your wilderness’.
Let us not be like the Jewish leaders who rejected Jesus because of hatred for the good things Jesus was doing. Jesus said “Therefore, be on the alert [be prepared and ready], for you do not know the day nor the hour [when the Son of Man will come]”.
You might not have the chance to receive him again when you are on your sick bed and can’t even open your month or involved in an accident or a tragic incident. Don’t reject Him, this is your moment if the word has come to you.
Shalom and Peace to you.
