6 On your walls, O Jerusalem,
I have set watchmen;
all the day and all the night
they shall never be silent.
You who put the LORD in remembrance,
take no rest,
7 and give him no rest
until he establishes Jerusalem
and makes it a praise in the earth.
Isaiah 62:6–7 (ESV)
Back in College we had an old watchman in our Minor Seminary who was always found asleep while on duty. One of our Senior Prefects complained to the Housemaster that the man needed to be retired because his actions poses a serious risk to us (the students) and himself. To prove that the man was always asleep, he brought the pillow, torchlight and the baton of the watchman to night prayers one time. We laughed it off. He said he easily picked them while the watchman was sleeping. He kept these items with him for days before the watchman begun asking some students for them. Brethren, this is not the kind of watchman that the Prophet Isaiah is talking about. This kind of watchman needs another watchman to keep watch over him. As children of God, we are watchmen because we become prayer intercessors. When we are in good shape, we pray for others and buildup savings in our heavenly account. “But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal.” (Matthew 6:20 (ESV)). When we are weak, that is when we tap into that heavenly account.
There comes a time in our lives when we slip off the path God has laid for us. He knows we are humans and weak, therefore need support every time. Unless you think otherwise, remember the words of Paul in 1 Corinthians 10:12 (ESV); “Therefore let anyone who thinks that he stands take heed lest he fall”. Many of us started so well because we grew up in a Christian home or found ourselves always amongst Christian friends who would pull us to church or attended camp meetings and we got saved. However, along the line we tripped, fell off and probably still on the ground. If you are still down and alive, I want you to know that God placed watchmen on your walls who have been interceding for you and will never stop until you are up again. Verse 6 of our text says “On your walls, O Jerusalem, I have set watchmen; all the day and all the night they shall never be silent”.
Brethren, how blessed you are to have watchmen who are constantly before God interceding for you. It is the reason you survived that terrible accident, it is the reason you are still alive even after that attack, it is the reason that of all the people being deported you were left out, it is the reason you survived that suicidal attempt, it is the reason you survived that domestic violence and many more ordeals or challenges. You are a living testimony of God’s grace. Many will not understand why you are still here after all the challenges and you yourself do not understand. But I want you to be thankful to God, wake up, wash yourself in the blood of Jesus Christ and become a watchman again for someone else.
As watchmen, just as verse 7 of the text tells us “we give him (God) no rest until he establishes Jerusalem (that is you and me) and makes it a praise in the earth”. You have fed and survived on the prayers of watchmen like your mum or dad, grandparents, friends, church members and others. It is time to live again and intercede for others as well. What is the mission of Watchmen? Watchmen, are always on their knees, pleading before the Alter of Grace. My final words to you, this weekend, find time and watch these two movies from Tyler Perry; ‘The War Room’ and ‘The Forge’. If you have already watched them, watch them again.
Shalom and Peace to you.
