FOOLS DON’T LIVE LONG (Part 3)
1 Samuel 25:14–44 (NIV)
Brethren, we continue with our series on 1 Samuel 25, the story of David, Abigail and Nabal. Yesterday we looked at how the selfless services of David and his men was unappreciated by Nabal. The lesson was that we should learn to appreciate and credit where it is due. Today, we focus on how Abigail saved both men. Am certain you are wondering how did she save David?
A wise spouse will always step in to cover the shame of their partner. This is because he/she knows the disgrace affects the entire family and not the one person. That was exactly the wisdom of Abigail, when one of her servant’s informed her about how Nabal treated David’s men they came to the house to request for some supplies. In my twenties, I used to love the taste of alcohol, drink as much as we wanted, come home and vomit all over in the bathroom. One day my mum sat me down and told me to watch the way I consume alcohol because it messed up my daddy’s life and made him abusive anytime he drunk. She said my dad lost his job as an engineer with one of the top manufacturing firms then because he went to work one day over-dozed with alcohol. This brought a lot of hardship on the family for a long time. I know my dad had a hard time quitting smoking and drink alcohol, but he did and turned to the Lord diligently until he passed.
I know there are young men and sometimes even ladies who also find themselves in such situations. You better check it and glue yourself to Jesus. For some it might not be alcohol, but you are involved in illegalities which is always covered up by your spouse. How long will you continue? Watch it, for the long rope will soon rich the tip. Abigail in verses 14-22 quickly takes an action to saved the entire family by reaching out to David and his soldiers before the family get wiped out. Note that she didn’t go arguing with Nabal to waste time or allow pride to rule her heart, but “acted quickly” – verse 18. This is how Abigail saved Nabal.
Now, how did Abigail save David as well (verse 32-34). Remember, David had sworn to wipe out the entire Nabal family including the servants. David was brutal and bloody, and would have done it. However, the humility, wisdom and beauty of Abigail captivates David when he encountered her. She immediately bowed to the ground in humility upon seeing David, pleaded on behalf of her husband and even went further to make a request from David. “And when the LORD your God has brought my lord success, remember your servant” (1 Samuel 25:31). And in verse 30, she also said “When the LORD has fulfilled for my lord every good thing he promised concerning him and has appointed him ruler over Israel, 31 my lord will not have on his conscience the staggering burden of needless bloodshed or of having avenged himself”. Proverbs 15:1 – “A gentle answer (kind words) deflects anger, but harsh words make tempers flare”.
My wonderful women and young ladies out there, you are endowed with beauty to be a blessing not the other way around. Remember Esther the queen in the book of Esther 1-10, and how she used her position to gain favor from King Xerxes which led to the preservation of an entire Jewish population. Another amazing woman is the Prophetess Deborah from Judges 4-5 and how she led Israel to a victorious battle against the Canaanite king named Jabin and his army. 1 Peter 3:1-6, encourages women to submit to their husbands, consider their inner beauty more than the outward adornment and not give way to fear. There are lot of scriptures that proves how powerful you are as women, but if you don’t apply this authority wisely and humbly, you will lose it.
When you have submitted and acted like our mother Sarah as 1 Peter 3:6 tells us, and your husband does not treat you well, God will deal with them according to his word in verse 7 of 1 Peter 3 – “so that nothing will hinder your (men) prayers”. In Nabal’s situation, upon hearing the news about what David was about to do, his heart failed and probably had stroke, and God ended his life within 10 days. God might not kill you instantly, but will deal with you (husband or wife) in a way that will humble you. When your spouse is giving you issues, go down on your knees and apply 1 Peter 3:7, God will deal with them for you. I believe in the power of prayers, rather than wasting my energy arguing with anyone. The story of David, Abigail and Nabal ended with Abigail’s request and wishes being granted. God took his own revenge against Nabal for verbally “touching the anointed of the Lord” (1 Chronicles 16:22, Psalm 105:15).
Shalom and Peace to you.
