Today all over the world we celebrate Good Friday; the death of our Lord Jesus Christ. My message to you yesterday, was to take you into the world of the Catholics. Stay with me again today as we listen to one of the incredible preaches of the 21st Century who was famous with this quote “You must remember to love people and use things, rather than to love things and use people.” Archbishop Fulton Sheen was an American Catholic Priest who served as Bishop of Rochester from 1956 to 1969. And later as Archbishop of the titular see of Newport, Wales. He was known for his preaching, especially on television and radio. While reading about his life story, I came across this interesting quote from him as well.
"The first subject of all to be studied is Scripture, and this demands not only the reading of it but the study of commentaries. ... Protestant commentaries, I discovered, were also particularly interesting because Protestants have spent more time on Scripture than most of us."
My dear brothers and sisters, I believe this sits well with you, particularly my Catholic brothers and sisters and let say other Christians, who are so rigid to their denomination. Open up and read wide, listen to other preachers outside your denomination. I did that, and it has help build my faith in God and not my denomination. Remember what I always say; “On judgement day God will not ask you question about your church, but rather Matthew 25:42-46 “For I was hungry you did not feed me…”.
Let’s make progress and listen to the 58th Good Friday sermon from Archbishop Sheen. He titles this one “Spectators on and about the Cross”. He explains to us three spectators who had gathered during the crucifixion of our Lord. I pray that the Holy Spirit will remove any substance that will stand in the way of this message reaching the depth of our heart, and push it down, so that it will take firm root in us. Amen.
