DAY 20: PRAYER FOCUS
CHOOSING TO SERVE
“Not so with you. Instead, whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant, and whoever wants to be first must be slave of all. For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.”
Mark 10:43–45 (NIV)
During my childhood years, I learnt to serve God and people through the help of my mum. Every Saturday morning mum will match all of us to the church grounds for us to help clean God’s house for the Sunday mass. Over time I started going myself alone without her asking. Through this simple act, God opened many doors for me in the form of Christian friends, helpers and success in my education and career. I attended one of the best secondary schools in Ghana on full scholarship from a benevolent church member, who became my God mother till date. This is a school I never selected during the selection process, but God used my God mother to open that door for me. My career in IT was because of her generosity to enroll me on scholarship in her Computer Training School. She also gave me my first employment after secondary school.
Dr. Margaret P. Price (Auntie Maggie as we called her) did not only lavish me and my other twelve (12) church friends with financial and material support, but also thought us how to serve God and neighbor. On Saturday’s she will drive all of us to the home for the Missionaries of Charity (Ashaiman) to clean and also start a small farm for the reverend sisters. She capitalized on our number and trained us to establish the maiden Junior order of the Society of Saint Vincent de Paul (Junior Vincentians). I have seen first-hand how God moved in the life of Auntie Margaret in many ways any time she needed help or support. She had this kind of favor that you can never resist or say no to her request for support. Because she was devoted to God and his service in his house, faith-filled and prayerful. A woman with the spirit of excellence and integrity both in her career as a Health Management Consultant and in God’s house. Auntie Maggie’s dedication to serving God, his Priests and people around her was phenomenal. She will never miss mass even when she travels to work in another city.
You might not understand why I am eulogizing her that much. It is because she impacted my faith life and serving God, family and neighbor (especially the under privileged). Auntie Maggie told me the elderly in her family do not live beyond a certain age because of hereditary diabetes, but she through the grace of God has crossed that age and almost hitting ninety (90) years. She is still strong and active as I meet her in her early 50’s. You can read more about her life story from her autobiography book titled “My Incredible Life’s Journey” on Amazon.
Beloved, service to mankind, is service to God. You need the spirit of humility, patience and perseverance to be of service to people and God wherever you find yourself. Remember, God’s favor was with Joseph wherever he was place, even in prison he served people and pleased God (Genesis 39-41). I encourage you to choose to serve God and neighbor wholeheartedly and see if God will not open uncommon doors for you. This is the call Jesus is inviting us to today.
Shalom.
